I think it's not wise to assume that because people may not oppose gay civil unions, or that they think gays deserve certain rights and/or benefits, that this means that there is also acceptance.
I'm a Texan. I am more likely to believe that people are thinking 2 things. One, it's a free country based on equality, so let's be equal. Two, I really dont give a fuck what you do, it's not my business what you do in your bedroom just keep it out of my face and it's not my place to tell you what to do.
That does not mean acceptance of gays. It just means acceptance of a more generalized idea of equality.
